WYD in Sydney

World Youth Day has come to Sydney. Though it is primarily a religious event for the Catholics, the whole city seems to have been taken up with the festive spirit with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in town (including the Pope of course). Below is a photo I took of some youngster boarding a bus in North Sydney, complete with a Cockerel head gear. Vive la France !

Borobudur

Anthony and I spent three days in Central Java last week. The main objective was to visit the Borobudur site but we also had the opportunity to take in other sights around Solo (Surakarta) and Jogjakarta. With the tune of Bengawan Solo ringing in my ears, I'm preparing the Powerpoint show of the visit which will be posted soon.

Meeting up with Koh Eng Tat

It has been exactly 50 years since Eng Tat and I last saw each other at the end of primary school at Haig Road Boys' School. Anthony met up with him not long ago and organised this reunion at Katong. We are all older and perhaps wiser !

Farewell to the Liquid Amber

Our Liquid Amber tree, pretty to look at especially in autumn, was too close to the house and had caused much damage to our timber deck. The birds, frequent visitors, had made it impossible for us to stay under the tree for any length of time most of the year round. In the end we made the sad decision to have it removed.

Dom climbed up the tree which was in its last autumnal glory . . . .

and started pruning . . . .

till there were only a few branches left. . .

The excitement was recorded on video too, such as this one where the last nearly ended up on the roof !

and then there was only the main trunk left . . .

meanwhile the heavy chipper worked away at the front . . .

and then the main trunk was gradually sliced away . . .

into pieces small enough to be carried . . . .

and finally the main stump was ground . . . .

leaving the house with a bare look, hopefully not for too long.

Bus on Railway Track

A bus at the Epping bus terminal came to grief on the Epping Station track after reversing on its own through the fencing on the road above.

The next train was about to depart Cheltenham, the next station up the line and due to arrive in a few minutes but was stopped in time. Yvonne was on the train and had to travel to Straithfield via Hornsby instead, a journey that took at least 45 minutes longer. Fortunately no one was injured.

Changi Terminal 3

For those who are yet to have the chance to visit or go through the new Terminal 3 at Changi, below are some photos I took recently with my mobile phone. (click for thumbnails for larger image)

Who chose the carpet ?

A clever mosaic/montage but no one seemed to notice it.
Waiting for the passengers - the terminal is still underutilised.
Behind the screen of creepers - the men's toilet !

Impressive ceiling to let in light and save energy.
Below 3 photos -main departure hall.
