More Lunar New Year Photos - Chinatown

Nowadays Singaporeans have to come to Australia to see real street side firecrackers!

Sydney's Chinatown is quite modern looking unlike those in North America. Vancouver's Chinatown is designated as an historical site with many buildings classified as heritage buildings. Problem with such designation is just about any renovation must be reviewed and approved by the Heritage Committee.

There are many such heritage protected places nowadays. With their well kept appearances, they have unfortunately taken on a rather boring and neutral appearance - just like museums ! There are some protection on Sydney chinatown and certainly there are building controls such as in building heights. Tourists' interests have turned it into somewhat of an object of tourism rather than living but by and large, it is a vibrant and living locality complete with its dirt and litter. For better real-life "Chinatowns" there are several other suburbs in Sydney which are more authentic.
